Product Description
Traditional alaia surfboard shaping represents one of the most ancient forms of wave riding craftsmanship, connecting modern surfers to Hawaiian surfing heritage through hands-on wooden board construction using sustainable paulownia wood. This comprehensive surfboard shaping workshop guides participants through the complete process of crafting their own rideable alaia board from raw timber to finished masterpiece. This hands-on woodworking experience takes place at AHUA Headquarters in Charneca da Caparica with all materials and tools provided by experienced surf craftsman and monitor Nuno Mesquita. Learn to design and cut precise outlines, master bottom contour shaping, and craft professional rail profiles while exploring traditional shaping methods adapted with modern techniques and equipment options.
The workshop follows a structured four-module approach covering the seven essential steps to alaia perfection, from initial design through final protective finishing. Participants work on premium paulownia wood blanks (220x45x3cm) to create Absolute, King, or Innovator models up to 7’2″, learning auxiliary line placement, pre-shaping techniques, final detail work, and oil finishing methods through hands-on practice with both manual and electric tool options. The experience concludes with a fully functional, personalized surfboard ready to ride immediately, providing not just a finished product but comprehensive shaping knowledge that allows continued board refinement and customization long after the workshop ends.
Why join? Perfect for surfers and woodworking enthusiasts wanting to connect with ancient Hawaiian surfing traditions while creating a personalized, functional surfboard. Ideal for those seeking hands-on craftsmanship experience with no prior carpentry skills required, resulting in an immediately rideable board and lifelong shaping knowledge.
