Product Description
Bunho (Schoenoplectus lacustris) is a plant that grows in wetlands along Portuguese rivers. Traditionally, it has been used to make mats, baskets, furniture, and to weave chair seats.
We welcome the beginning of summer by learning how to weave bunho mats on a traditional stone loom. These mats are typically used to create shaded areas, for rest and relaxation.
Objectives
To introduce participants to the art of weaving bunho mats, guided by a master basket weaver with many years of experience in this traditional craft. The main goal is to revive ancestral techniques by learning directly from the masters, ensuring that this valuable knowledge is passed down through generations.
Target Audience
Open to everyone interested in this traditional art — whether out of curiosity or as an introduction to further practice and artisanal mat-making. No prior experience is required.
