Technique Introduction: Begin with ceramics process overview and wheel throwing fundamentals demonstration, understanding basic principles of centering, opening, and pulling clay on rotating pottery wheel.
Clay Centering Practice: Learn essential first step of wheel throwing, mastering hand positioning and pressure application forcing clay into centered symmetrical cone on wheelhead establishing foundation for all subsequent shaping.
Opening and Pulling: Practice creating interior space in centered clay then pulling walls upward transforming solid ball into hollow cylinder form, developing coordination between wheel speed, hand pressure, and clay moisture.
Cylinder Creation: Focus on achieving cup shape through controlled wall pulling, learning how gradual upward pressure with proper hand positioning extends clay vertically while maintaining even wall thickness and symmetrical profile.
Shaping Exploration: Experiment with modifying basic cylinder into cups, bowls, or other functional forms through rim shaping, wall curving, and base refinement techniques adapted to your creative vision and skill development.
Unlimited Practice: Work with no clay usage limit allowing repeated attempts, experimentation with different forms, and progressive skill building through practice rather than single rushed attempt with limited material.

Hi! My name is Gaëlle Van Branteghem and founder of Gaelle Ceramica. I moved to Ericeira in 2017 and was ‘forced’ to rediscover myself and what I want to do in life besides being a devoted mom. I subscribed for a ceramics workshop and knew immediately that I wanted to discover more within the world of ceramics.
By coincidence I started talking to a local ceramist in Mafra, Mister Paulo, and asked him straight to the point if he wanted to teach me the technique of wheel-thrown pottery and so I started throwing two times a week. I fell in love with the wheel the moment I started. The mesmirizing proces of making a piece of ceramic out of a ball of clay is so fulfilling.
I straight away knew I wanted to continue with this craftsmanship and make it my business… I continued my learning process with Paulo and invested in my own wheel. Little by little I improved and my small business concept, Gaelle Ceramica, was born.
