Beatbox workshop in Coimbra for anyone who wants to learn to make music with nothing but their voice, from complete scratch, guided by one of the best and most renowned beatboxers in Portugal. Led by João Jewow Marques, a professional beatbox artist known for his low frequencies and unique collection of sounds, this fun and interactive session teaches you to create a basic drum set with your voice, add cool techniques and start developing your own sound in a single workshop. No instruments needed, no musical background required and no minimum age below which curiosity stops being valid.
The session moves through the fundamentals of beatboxing step by step, starting with the core sounds that form the foundation of every beat and building toward techniques that let you combine them into something that actually grooves. João shares the tools and principles that will let you keep improving independently long after the workshop ends, because beatboxing is one of those skills that rewards practice anywhere: on the way to school, waiting for a bus, in the shower. By the end of the session you will have the basics locked in and the confidence to keep going.

I am João Jewow Marques, a professional beatbox artist based in Portugal known for my low frequencies and unique sound collection. I have been standing out in the Portuguese beatbox scene since a young age and remain one of the most recognised names in the craft today. I teach these workshops because beatboxing is one of the most accessible and genuinely joyful ways to make music, and watching someone produce their first proper beat for the first time never gets old.
Sessions run with a minimum of 1 participant. A 10% discount applies for children up to 12 years old. Based in Coimbra and available to travel to other regions upon availability.

Do I need to bring any material?
Nope, just you (and your mouth) is enough!
Don't you need to have a lot of talent to be a beatboxer?
Practice makes perfect and beatboxing is no different. You might struggle a bit if you're just getting started, which is perfectly natural, but if you keep practicing each sound, you'll eventually nail them. Simple as that. Muscle memory plays a big role here. Talent is an extra.
How do you teach beatbox to someone?
Usually everyone starts with the basic drum sounds, which are the kick, hi-hat and snare (same as a drummer). I will teach and show you how to do those and practice them together with you. I have different sound sequences (beats) you can try in order to work on your sounds and sense of rhythm. From there on it's a whole universe of possibilities!
