Reviving Fabrics: Discover the Art of Shibori and Natural Dyeing Techniques! 🎨

In this workshop, we will explore wringing, pressing and squeezing techniques that print mesmerizing patterns on fabric. Shibori is an art originated in Japan, and became somewhat widespread when less privileged social classes wanted to embelish garments made of hemp, since they were not allowed to wear silk and cotton was a not so accessible fabric to the masses, back in the day. We will dye the clothes/fabric with natural pigments, so participants will be briefly introduced to the method of dyeing with natural substances, so they can be 100% successful in their own creations. Creativity and curiosity will be enticed in this activity – be prepared to produced fascinating patterns and to bring home beautifully transformed garments/fabrics.

Shibori makes any garment become alive again, and the possibilities are endless!

Brief History of Shibori and Tie-Dye Techniques

Teacher/ Sabina Baptista – Arts and crafts have been extremely present throughout my whole life, and sewing, drawing, making jewerly and natural cosmetics are some of my favorite hobbies to this day. I’m a Sociology undergraduate, a master in Development Studies, specialized in Sustainable Development, and certified seamstress by Modatex in Lisbon. One of my personal and professional goals is to link my love for nature and traditional arts to the creation of slow fashion, to the sustainable transformation of fabrics and garments, and to share knowledge in the sewing universe that might inspire the upbringing of ecological ways of perceiving and consuming fashion.
