I’m Raquel, a multilingual, self-taught ceramicist and lifelong creative who found my way to clay through curiosity, experimentation, and a desire to make things with my hands.
My artistic journey began with air-dry clay, where I discovered the joy of shaping, sculpting, and bringing small ideas to life. What started as a simple creative outlet gradually grew into a deeper fascination with ceramics and the process of working with clay. I eventually transitioned into ceramics, embracing the unpredictability, patience, and hands-on nature of the medium. For me, working with clay is as much about the process as it is about the finished piece — slowing down, experimenting, learning from mistakes, and allowing each piece to develop its own character.
Being self-taught has made curiosity a big part of my creative practice. I’m constantly learning, trying new techniques, exploring different forms and textures, and allowing myself the freedom to experiment. I love the balance between intention and unpredictability that ceramics offers, and I’m particularly drawn to pieces that feel tactile, organic, and full of personality.
Creativity is woven into many different parts of my life. When I’m not covered in clay, you might find me teaching Portuguese to expats, hiking and spending time in nature, playing with animals, writing, or learning and practising other creative crafts. These different interests often find their way back into my artistic practice, inspiring new ideas, shapes, textures, stories, and ways of seeing the world.
At the heart of what I do is a love for making, learning, and staying curious. Whether I’m working with clay, words, language, or another creative medium, I enjoy the process of discovering where an idea can take me.
