There is a particular kind of focus that happens when a child gets their hands into clay for the first time. My kids ceramics workshop in Coimbra gives children aged 6 to 12 the space to explore that feeling fully, working with coloured clay and engobes to build their own three-dimensional figures and scenes from scratch. The session is built around free creative expression, meaning every child interprets the material in their own way and leaves with something that is genuinely theirs.
We work through three core areas during the session. Children learn to manipulate clay surfaces to create texture and detail, using small portions of clay to build woolly, rough or layered effects that give their pieces realism and character. They experiment with colour using vibrant combinations of coloured clays and engobes, exploring how tone and contrast work together on a three-dimensional surface. And they build complete figures and scenes on irregular bases, learning how to create stability and depth in a fully three-dimensional composition. Throughout the session I am present to guide, encourage and support each child individually.

I am Cláudia Pires and I have been working with ceramics and teaching for over thirty years. I designed this workshop specifically for children because clay is one of the most honest creative materials there is: it responds directly to what you do with it, rewards curiosity, and never lies about effort. Watching children discover that for the first time is something that never gets old.
Open to children aged 6 to 12. No prior experience with clay or ceramics needed. Just bring curiosity and clothes you do not mind getting a little dirty.
