Rota do Contrabando in Marvão with Marvão Adventure, a two-hour guided walking experience at 40 euros per person through the hidden mountain trails once used by smugglers crossing the border between Portugal and Spain. Starting in the historic village of Galegos, this immersive cultural adventure follows the authentic paths once used to transport coffee and other goods secretly across the mountains, guided by passionate locals who know the land and its stories intimately. More than a hike, this is a journey through courage, survival and the untold history of the Alentejo frontier.
The route passes through ancient stone trails, remote landscapes and traditional villages while Afonso and the Marvão Adventure team bring the real stories of the contraband routes to life through local storytelling, historical interpretation and genuine connection to a forgotten way of life. The combination of soft adventure and authentic heritage creates an experience that is as culturally rich as it is visually extraordinary, with panoramic views over the borderlands that tell their own story of why these trails existed and what it took to walk them.

I am Afonso Melara, founder of Marvão Adventure and Comporta Experience. I have spent over six years creating immersive outdoor and cultural experiences in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park, rooted in authenticity, human connection and the belief that the best way to discover Portugal is through its nature, its history and the people who know them best. The Rota do Contrabando is one of my favourite experiences to guide because the stories are real and the landscape that holds them is extraordinary.
