Throughout the workshop, you’ll actively participate in almost every step of the process under the guidance of an experienced professional shaper. Rather than simply watching demonstrations, you’ll learn by doing, developing practical skills while understanding how every decision—from the outline to the rails and rocker—affects the way a board performs in the water.

What You’ll Experience
1. From Concept to Design
Every great surfboard begins with an idea.

Working alongside your shaper, you’ll decide on the type of board you want to build, exploring its outline, dimensions, volume, rocker, intended use, and performance characteristics. Together, you’ll design your board using professional Shape3D software, creating a surfboard tailored specifically to your surfing style and goals.

2. Materials & Tools
Discover the materials that make every surfboard unique.

You’ll learn about foam blanks, resins, fibreglass, pigments, and the specialist tools used by professional shapers, understanding how every material influences the finished board before putting them into practice yourself.

3. Shape Your Own Surfboard
This is where your surfboard truly comes to life.

Using professional shaping tools, you’ll cut, refine, and sculpt your board while learning about rails, rocker, thickness distribution, contours, and the subtle details that define a board’s performance.

This is a genuinely hands-on experience. You’ll actively shape your own surfboard under the guidance of your instructor, learning the same techniques used by professional shapers.

4. Fin Systems
Learn how different fin systems influence performance in the water.

You’ll discover how fin placement, templates, and configurations affect speed, manoeuvrability, drive, and control, giving you a better understanding of how to choose the right setup for your surfing.

5. Paint & Personalise
Every surfboard tells a story.

This is your opportunity to make yours completely unique by adding colour, pigments, artwork, logos, and personal finishing touches that reflect your personality and style.

6. Lamination & Final Finish
The final stage transforms your shaped blank into a surf-ready board.

You’ll observe the complete lamination process as experienced laminators apply fibreglass and resin before sanding and polishing your board to its finished form.

Because lamination requires specialist skills, chemicals, and strict safety procedures, this stage is carried out by professional craftsmen. However, you’ll be present throughout the process, learning every step and gaining a complete understanding of how your surfboard is finished.

You’ll complete every practical stage of the process while benefiting from the precision of modern shaping technology, allowing more time to focus on craftsmanship and finishing techniques.

Hand Shape Workshop
55 Hours

For those who want the full traditional shaping experience.

Starting with a raw foam blank, you’ll use an electric planer and traditional shaping tools to hand-shape the board from scratch, just as surfboard craftsmen have done for decades.

This option offers the deepest understanding of surfboard design, construction, and craftsmanship.
