Horseback riding experience in Alentejo for all levels, from complete beginners to riders looking to build confidence in one of Portugal’s most stunning coastal landscapes. Led by Filipe Serralha, founder of Horse Riding Portugal and a horseman born and raised in the rural landscapes of Southwest Alentejo, this is an authentic and genuinely unhurried experience that begins on the ground and ends on the cliffs of Cabo Sardão overlooking the ocean.
The experience starts before you ever get in the saddle. You begin with a hands-on introduction to horse care, learning how to groom, handle and understand the horses alongside Filipe, building the trust and connection between rider and horse that makes everything that follows feel natural rather than nervous. From there you move into the riding session itself, working on the basics of balance, communication and feeling comfortable in the saddle as you ride through one of the most breathtaking stretches of coastline in Portugal. All horses are well-trained, carefully selected for their calm temperament and prepared personally by Filipe to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience from start to finish.

I am Filipe Serralha, a horseman born and raised in Southwest Alentejo and founder of Horse Riding Portugal. Horses have been central to my life since childhood and I have spent years training them with respect, patience and intuition, because horsemanship for me is a relationship built on trust rather than a technical skill. My goal with every experience is simple: that you feel safe, that you feel the connection with the horse, and that you leave with a lasting memory of this landscape and what it feels like to move through it on horseback.
As the experience takes place outdoors in a naturally windy location, availability and timings may vary. Children aged 4 to 8 can ride together, with two children sharing one horse. No prior riding experience needed.

Do I need prior horse riding experience?
No experience is required. This experience is suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some riding background. The session is adapted to your level to ensure you feel safe and comfortable.
What does the experience include?
The experience includes both ground and riding activities. You will learn how to prepare your horse, including grooming and basic handling, followed by a guided riding session focused on balance, confidence, and connection with the horse.
What should I wear?
We recommend wearing comfortable clothes suitable for outdoor activity, such as long pants and closed-toe shoes (preferably with a small heel). Sunscreen and a hat are also advised on sunny days.
Is it safe for children?
Yes, safety is a top priority and children will be able to join the experience. The horses are calm, well-trained, and selected for their gentle nature. You will be guided throughout the entire experience, and instructions are always tailored to your level.

My name is Filipe Serralha, a horseman born and raised in the rural landscapes of Southwest Alentejo, Portugal. Growing up surrounded by nature, horses have always been a central part of my life. This deep connection with the land and animals naturally shaped my path and passion.
Over the years, I’ve dedicated myself to training horses with respect, patience, and intuition. For me, horsemanship is not just a skill—it’s a relationship built on trust and understanding. I work closely with each horse, ensuring they are calm, well-prepared, and confident, so they can safely guide riders through unforgettable experiences.
As the founder of Horse Riding Portugal, my goal is to share the beauty of this region and the unique bond between horse and rider.
