Linocut is one of the most satisfying printmaking techniques you can learn precisely because the gap between knowing nothing and producing something genuinely beautiful is remarkably short. At our linocut workshop in Lisbon, we guide you through the full process of carving your own original design into linoleum and printing it by hand, exploring the creative possibilities of a technique that has been used by artists for over a century and still feels completely contemporary. The session runs in both English and Portuguese and is open to anyone aged 18 and over.
We start with an introduction to linocut as a technique and its relationship to the broader tradition of printmaking, giving you enough context to approach the carving with intention. From there you move into designing and transferring your own composition onto the linoleum block before picking up the carving tools and working through the engraving process step by step. Our tutor guides you through every stage, from the first cuts to the final print, helping you understand how positive and negative space work together and how to get a clean, confident result from your block.
