Oil painting class in Algarve for anyone who wants to learn to paint in oils in a welcoming group environment where all abilities are genuinely welcome. Led by Karen Wride, a professional artist based in the Algarve whose work is shaped daily by the light, colours and landscapes of this region, these two-hour sessions cover everything from the very basics of oil painting through to techniques used by professional artists. Several of Karen’s students have gone on to launch professional art careers of their own. All sessions are in oils exclusively and all materials are provided.
The group format adds something that private lessons cannot: a community of people at different stages of the same journey, learning together, sharing the particular satisfaction of making something with your hands in a medium that rewards patience and attention. Karen teaches impressionism, realism and abstract expressionism, adapting her guidance to where each student actually is rather than where a fixed curriculum says they should be. You leave with a finished oil painting made by you in two hours, new techniques to take forward and a genuine sense of accomplishment that is difficult to find anywhere else.

I am Karen Wride, a professional artist living and working in the Algarve. The light, colours and natural surroundings here inspire me every day and deeply influence everything I paint. My own style is impressionism but I teach realism and abstract expressionism with equal care, because what matters most to me is helping each student find their own voice in the medium. I love working with colour, texture and movement to create pieces that capture emotion as much as a scene. Please note I teach oils only and do not offer classes in acrylics, watercolours or pastels.
Available in the Algarve. All materials included. Mixed ability, no prior experience needed.

Do I need any previous painting experience to join the class?
Not at all. My classes are designed for mixed abilities, so complete beginners are very welcome, as well as more experienced painters wanting to improve their skills.
What type of painting will I learn?
All classes are taught using oil paints. I teach everything from the basics of painting to more advanced techniques, including impressionism, realism, and abstract expressionism.
How long is each class?
Each class lasts 2 hours, giving you plenty of time to learn, paint, and enjoy the creative process in a relaxed setting.
What will I leave with after the class?
You’ll leave with your own finished painting, new techniques you can continue to use, and a real sense of achievement from creating something yourself.
Is the class just about painting?
Not at all. It’s also a chance to relax, meet a welcoming community of fellow art lovers, and enjoy a fun, inspiring creative experience.
