Private oil painting class in Algarve for anyone who wants to learn to paint in oils, whether you are picking up a brush for the first time or looking to develop an existing practice. Led by Karen Wride, a professional artist based in the Algarve whose work is shaped by the light, colours and landscapes of this region, these two-hour classes are always mixed ability and tailored entirely to where you are and where you want to go. Several of Karen’s students have gone on to launch professional art careers of their own. All materials are provided and all sessions are in oils exclusively.

Karen teaches everything from the very basics of oil painting through to painting at a professional level, covering the foundational skills of colour mixing, composition and brushwork as well as the specific approaches required for impressionism, realism and abstract expressionism. The class is private by design, meaning the focus is entirely on you, your pace, your questions and your painting. You leave with a finished work done by your own hand, new techniques to take forward and the particular satisfaction of having made something in a medium that rewards patience and attention in equal measure.

I am Karen Wride, a professional artist living and working in the Algarve. The light, colours and natural surroundings here inspire me every day and deeply influence everything I paint. My own style is impressionism but I teach realism and abstract expressionism with equal care, because what matters most to me is helping each student find their own voice in the medium. I love working with colour, texture and movement to create pieces that capture emotion as much as a scene, and that same attention is what I bring to every private class I teach. Please note I teach oils only and do not offer classes in acrylics, watercolours or pastels.
