Marbling and trompe l’oeil painting workshop in Lisbon for anyone who has ever looked at a marble column and wondered if they could replicate that depth and elegance with their own hands. Led by Vera Rebelo Pinto, a Lisbon-based painter trained in graphic arts at António Arroio and decorative painting at Fress, this three-hour session takes you into the world of decorative illusion painting where pigment becomes stone and light takes on physical form. All materials included and no prior painting experience needed.

The session unfolds in two distinct and interconnected stages. The first is the creation of false marble: learning the marbling techniques that replicate the organic depth, veins and sediment layers of noble stone, building a base so realistic it appears cold to the touch. The second stage constructs a decorative ornament directly over the marble surface using trompe l’oeil technique, creating the illusion of three-dimensional volume using only paint. Vera teaches you to work with light and shadow to give the ornament curvature and body, projected shadow to make the design appear to lift from the marble background as a separate element, and highlight points to simulate the reflection of light on polished stone edges. The finished panel confuses the eye and the hand simultaneously: one sees a sculpted stone ornament in relief, the other feels only a flat surface.

I am Vera Rebelo Pinto, a painter based in Lisbon. I paint every day between the classes that fill my schedule, because doing what you love most is a privilege I have enjoyed for many years. I studied graphic arts at António Arroio art school, completed the decorative painting course at Fress and attended the first year of painting at the Sociedade Nacional de Belas Artes. Decorative painting has been my life and this workshop is a distillation of everything I find most fascinating about what paint can do when technique and patience come together.

Duration three hours. Takes place in Lisbon. All materials included. No prior painting experience needed.
