My name is Catarina Azevedo. I’m a bookbinder from Porto.
I have a degree in Graphic Design, which is how I first started making books. I love teaching, having taught myself bookbinding when I was starting out, and I find it incredibly rewarding to see the happiness on someone’s face when they admire the first book they’ve made.
O Alfaiate do Livro came to life in 2010, when I felt confident enough to bind my friends’ projects as well as my own. In 2012, I took the plunge and held my first workshop. It went so well that I never stopped!
I’ve been part of collectives, worked as a designer, and even helped out in a printmaking studio, but in the end, I chose bookbinding as my craft and profession.
No previous experience is needed! This workshop is suitable for beginners and anyone curious about discovering the art of traditional bookbinding.
You’ll learn the basic steps of making a hardcover book by hand, including folding sheets into sections, sewing them together to create the book block, measuring and cutting the cover, and assembling the finished book.
The workshop is led by Catarina Azevedo, a bookbinder from Porto and the founder of O Alfaiate do Livro. With a background in Graphic Design and years of experience teaching bookbinding, she’ll guide you through the process.
You’ll take home your own handmade small hardcover book, created from scratch during the workshop using the techniques you’ve learned.
The book block is the inside of the book, made by folding sheets into sections and sewing them together. The cover is the hard outer structure that you’ll measure, cut, and construct before assembling the finished book.
