About
Mafalda Maya was born in Lisbon in 1984. She found in jewellery a form of artistic expression, inspired by memories of her grandmother’s pieces, which were kept with love and care.
She began her artistic journey at Escola António Arroio, where she was first introduced to goldsmithing techniques and developed a passion for workshop-based and experimental work. She completed her jewellery design training at Escola Contacto Directo.
Between 2007 and 2009, she lived in New York, where she studied at UrbanGlass, adding glass techniques to her training. In 2010, she refined her torchwork technique with Kristina Logan in Nice.
Since then, she has explored the sculptural world of wax with Susana Teixeira and Calixto Sanchez (2018 and 2022, AllisLab), as well as the foldforming technique with Ana Margarida Carvalho (2021, Ar.Co).
In 2021, she took part in a torchwork workshop with Sérgio Lopes at CEARTE in Coimbra, where she discovered borosilicate glass, expanding her exploration of volume and texture.
She has a studio on Avenida de Madrid, in Areeiro, Lisbon, with visits available by appointment.
