Not at all! The Initiation course is designed for complete beginners. If you already have sailing experience and have completed the Initiation level, you can progress to the Improvement course to develop more advanced techniques and learn about boat performance.
The academy offers scheduled sailing sessions on Saturdays and Sundays, with morning and afternoon options. Each class lasts 3 hours, making it a great way to fit sailing into your weekend. The course consists of 8 lessons, so you can choose the dates you want to attend the course. Upon confirmation, the BB Douro team will confirm with you the final arrangements.
In the Initiation course, you’ll learn essential sailing skills, including safety procedures, boat setup, basic manoeuvres and the fundamentals of sailing. In the Improvement course, you’ll explore more advanced navigation and performance techniques, including the use of additional sails.
The course includes 8 group sailing lessons with 4–5 participants per group, practical instruction and the use of sailing boats. Lessons are led by experienced instructors and take place on the Douro River, with opportunities to progress towards coastal sailing as your skills develop.

Yes. Sailing sessions are dependent on weather and river conditions to ensure everyone’s safety. If conditions are unsuitable for sailing, a session may be rescheduled in coordination with BBDouro. The instructor will assess the conditions and determine whether it is safe to proceed, so please keep in mind that session dates and times may be subject to change.
