Escola do Mato is an organisation dedicated to teaching bushcraft and fostering a deep connection with nature.
Since 2011, we have been offering specialised courses that enable our students to develop practical skills and gain a deeper understanding of the natural environment.
Our programmes are carefully designed to provide a gradual learning experience, where nature becomes a welcoming, safe, and stimulating space. Through our activities, participants gain the confidence and independence needed to interact with the natural environment in an autonomous, mindful, and balanced way.
Our approach is inclusive and accessible, designed for everyone — regardless of physical ability or level of experience. We offer a rich, multilingual learning experience, creating a multicultural environment where everyone feels welcome.
At Escola do Mato, our goal is to provide practical and transformative experiences that go far beyond technical knowledge alone. We value sustainability, safety, and the well-being of our students, equipping them with the tools to build a genuine connection with the natural world.
No. The Basic Survival Course is designed to teach essential survival skills from the ground up. Over two days, you’ll learn and practise how to assess emergency situations, establish priorities, build shelter, make fire, obtain safe water, and signal for help.
The course covers prevention, risk assessment, survival priorities, shelter building, fire lighting, water collection and purification, emergency signalling, and survival kits. You’ll also learn how to recognize environmental risks such as cold, heat, and dehydration, and how to use cutting tools safely.
Yes. Participants should bring their own outdoor and personal equipment, including a backpack, sleeping bag or wool blanket, sleeping mat, flashlight, first-aid kit, water bottle, personal hygiene items, and suitable clothing and protection for the weather. Specific training items are also required, including a fixed-blade knife, sharpening tool, rope, small mirror, whistle, lighter, and firesteel. Please check the full equipment list before attending.
All meals are provided by Escola do Mato throughout the two-day course. The food is prepared with care, and the instructors have experience in outdoor cooking. If you have any allergies or dietary requirements, please let us know when registering. You’re also welcome to bring a regional speciality to share with the group.
You’ll spend one night sleeping in a natural shelter that you build during the training, using a tarp or other suitable protection. This practical experience helps you understand the type of shelter you can create in an emergency, depending on the equipment available to you. A tent is an option for participants who cannot sleep in a shelter.
The training takes place near the vehicles, so there will be no significant travel involved. The site has a shared training area, outdoor showers, and toilets. Although the course includes a night outdoors, some basic facilities are available.
The course is an intensive, hands-on training experience that involves outdoor activities, building a shelter, working with fire, and practising survival techniques. You should be prepared to spend time outdoors in changing weather conditions and bring appropriate clothing and equipment. The training area is near the vehicles, with no significant journeys planned.
Bring your sleeping bag or wool blanket, sleeping mat, flashlight, tarp measuring at least 3 × 3 metres, and personal essentials. For the practical exercises, you’ll need a fixed-blade knife, sharpening tool, at least 10 metres of paracord or sisal rope, a small mirror, whistle, lighter, and firesteel. A notebook, pencil, and comfort items such as a camping chair are optional. Make sure to bring all the required equipment so you can participate fully in the training.
Participants aged 14 and over are welcome, provided they are accompanied by a responsible adult throughout the course.
