More about your Teacher Rui Rodrigues

    Rui Rodrigues

I’m Rui Rodrigues from Portugal. I’m a full time musician, author, teacher and researcher. For the last 30 years my life has revolved around drums. A rewarding journey in the search for the essence of rhythm and its impact on us humans. Since my graduation in communication and journalism, back in the day, I have nurtured this idea that rhythm is a transcendent form of communication, understood by everyone. A kind of universal language that connects us all.

On this long journey I had the privilege of working with extraordinarily talented musicians such as Josh Dion (Paris Monster), Galandum Galundaina, Michael Lauren, Carlão, Adolfo Lúxuria Canibal, Peyo Peev, Armando Teixeira (Balla), Nuno Rebelo (Mler Ife Dada), and many others. I played in bands like Big Fat Mamma, OSSO, At Freddy’s House, Ângela Polícia, Sangue Suor and Knok Knok. I composed plays directed by António Fonseca and Paulo Castro and musical pieces by Miso Ensemble. I wrote books such as “Manual de Percussão Tradicional” and “A Toque de Caixa”. I trained and still train several dozen drum students. I did more than a hundred workshops and masterclasses. l work continuously with schools, conservatories and projects linked to percussion, designing pedagogical programs for various cycles of regular education and special education.

But none of this would matter if I didn’t live to play drums.
