Joana Nogueira is a multidisciplinary visual artist and educator based in Porto since 2012. She works between ceramics and animation cinema, fields where she builds universes populated by hybrid characters that blend imagination, humor, and personal memory. She signs her ceramic project as Não Sou Rita, an identity where play, irony, and creative freedom become central. She holds a degree in Fine Arts from ESAD.CR and the Academy of Fine Arts of Venice, and a Master's in Illustration and Animation from IPCA. In 2020 she founded Terra Boa Atelier in Porto, where she develops her own work and is dedicated to teaching ceramics. In animation cinema, she has co-directed several internationally exhibited and awarded works, notably "Pronto, era assim" and "Três Vírgula Catorze," and has been developing community projects since 2016. She is part of CURATED PORTO and is represented by Portugal Manual. Her work is present in shops and exhibition spaces in Portugal, Europe, and the USA.
Not at all. The workshop is designed for complete beginners as well as anyone with some experience. Joana will guide you through the process from preparing the clay to sculpting, painting and finishing your imaginary friend.
You’ll create your own imaginary creature or friend entirely from scratch. You’ll model and sculpt it by hand, then use engobes to add colour, details and personality. Your final piece will be fired and glazed after the workshop.
Everything you need for the three-hour session is included: clay, tools, materials, guidance from Joana, and access to illustrated books for inspiration. Your finished piece will also be dried, fired and glazed at the atelier.
Your piece will be ready for collection from one month after the workshop, once it has dried, been fired and glazed. You’ll be notified when it’s ready, and you’ll have up to three months to collect it from Terra Boa Atelier.
The workshop is open to anyone aged 12 and over. No previous experience is required—just curiosity, good humour and a willingness to bring an imaginary character to life. Each session has a maximum of 15 participants.
