Mr. Greb was born in Estonia but his Ukrainian and Moldavian origin makes him a citizen of the world.
His obsession with high relief engraving (woodcut / lino gravure) is his main focus, but he also uses his technique and concept in both conventional painting on canvas and as well on the streets (graffiti), he also finds some time for animation and stop-motion.
His passion for art began in his early age and it was then, when he understood, what type of future he wanted for himself.
Born in the middle of Estonia's independence, he suffers the consequences of multiple nations being divided firsthand.
This is when he “enters” graffiti in his early adolescence and realizes that art can be his refuge and a means of communication and self expression.
He worked hard to get into university, studied fine arts - painting, sculpture and printmaking at the Estonian Academy of Arts in Tallinn, but when he first "met" printmaking, his life changed, and this very demanding and time consuming technique fascinated him, from drawing and carving the block to actual execution of the printing process itself.
The challenging nature of the whole procedure and possibility to work with a material as natural and accessible as wood made woodcut his great passion.
Since then dedicating most of his work to this technique, his mission is to make super precise engravings and be as accurate as possible, mixing the best of both worlds - traditional printmaking and graffiti influence, never forgetting the focus on the concept.
Always very current and sometimes ironic, touching the points that are most relevant to him in both political as well as environmental levels.
It is common to find in his cartoon style work a concept, which is usually serious matter and imperceptible at first glance.
Today he has his own open painting and engraving studio in Lisbon, Ericeira, and in Porto, with the main objective to share the knowledge and to help the people understand engraving/printmaking in general and its value both in history of mankind and the importance in the future that it may have.
Not at all. The workshop is suitable for complete beginners as well as artists and creatives who want to explore linocut and develop their printmaking skills.
You’ll create your own one-colour linocut design, carve it into a lino block, and use ink to print your artwork. You’ll leave with your handmade prints and the printing block you created.
All the essential materials and tools for the linocut process are provided, including lino, carving tools, and printing ink. Everything you need to get started is ready for you when you arrive.
The workshop is a complete five-hour hands-on experience, giving you enough time to learn the technique, carve your block, experiment with printing, and complete your own artwork without rushing.
The workshop is led by artist Mr Greb (@grebism), whose practice combines traditional printmaking techniques with a contemporary urban approach. He’ll guide you through the process and share techniques from his own artistic practice.
