Afonso Melara is the founder and owner of Comporta Experience and Marvão Adventure, two tourism brands rooted in authentic Portuguese nature, culture, and adventure. Born in Lisbon and shaped by the landscapes of Alentejo from an early age, Afonso grew up between the Atlantic coast of Comporta and the mountains of Marvão, developing a deep connection to the land, local traditions, and outdoor exploration. With a background in Active and Experiential Tourism and more than six years of experience creating immersive travel experiences, Afonso is known for designing journeys that go beyond traditional tourism. Through Comporta Experience, he curates private and personalized adventures that blend nature, gastronomy, history, and local storytelling. Through Marvão Adventure, he leads outdoor activities such as canyoning, kayaking, hiking, and off-road expeditions in the Serra de São Mamede Natural Park. A passionate surfer, traveler, and explorer, Afonso has also journeyed across Southeast Asia and South America, experiences that shaped his unique vision of tourism — one based on authenticity, human connection, and meaningful discovery. His work has earned recognition from travelers for his professionalism, creativity, and ability to reveal hidden sides of Portugal through unforgettable experiences.
The Rota do Contrabando is a guided walking experience that follows the historic trails once used for coffee smuggling between Portugal and Spain. It combines nature, history, storytelling, and cultural heritage in the beautiful border region of Marvão and Castelo de Vide.
The route is considered easy to moderate and is suitable for most fitness levels. The experience lasts approximately 2 hours and follows natural trails and historical paths through the mountains and villages.
We recommend comfortable walking shoes, water, sunscreen, weather-appropriate clothing, and a camera to capture the incredible landscapes and historical surroundings.
Booking is mandatory. Minimum: 2 participants (PAX) Maximum: 7 participants (PAX)
Yes. The experience is family-friendly and suitable for children who enjoy walking and outdoor exploration. It’s a great way for families to discover local history and nature together.
You’ll take home more than beautiful photos and landscapes — you’ll leave with authentic stories of the borderlands, a deeper connection to local culture, and the feeling of having walked through a hidden chapter of Portuguese history. It’s a unique cultural adventure that stays with you long after the trail ends.
