About Me
I’m Gonçalo Lopes Cardoso, founder of Atelier Encaixe and a Master Craftsman with more than 30 years of experience in carpentry, joinery, and the conservation and restoration of wood.
My work is rooted in a deep respect for traditional woodworking techniques and the knowledge passed down through generations. Over the years, I have worked on projects and delivered training both in Portugal and internationally, with a particular focus on preserving and sharing traditional craftsmanship.
At Atelier Encaixe, I believe that the best way to learn is through practice. Wood has its own character, and understanding it comes from working directly with the material — learning to read it, mark it, cut it, adjust it and bring different pieces together with precision.
Through my workshops, I aim to make traditional woodworking accessible through hands-on learning. Rather than simply demonstrating techniques, I encourage participants to pick up the tools, make mistakes, refine their approach and develop confidence through practice.
My goal is simple: to keep traditional woodworking skills alive by teaching people not just to see how it is done, but to do it themselves.

No. The workshop is designed as a practical introduction and is suitable for beginners as well as participants who already have some experience working with wood. You will receive close guidance throughout the process.
You will learn how to read and understand the material, accurately mark and lay out joints, execute traditional joinery, cut by hand using precision tools, refine and adjust joints, and check dimensions and fit. The focus is on learning through practical work.
Yes. This is a hands-on workshop carried out in a real workshop environment. You will work directly with real pieces of wood and traditional woodworking tools rather than simulations or purely theoretical exercises.
The workshop is led by Gonçalo Lopes Cardoso, Master Craftsman and founder of Atelier Encaixe. He has more than 30 years of experience in carpentry, joinery, furniture conservation and wood restoration, as well as experience teaching traditional techniques in Portugal and abroad.
The workshop runs over 3 days and is centred on practical, hands-on learning. Participants develop their skills through demonstration, repetition, correction and direct execution, with close guidance throughout the workshop.
