Led by Nelson Soares, this is an intimate and thoughtfully curated experience built around one of the oldest winemaking traditions in the world: the amphora, or talha, a large clay vessel used since Roman times to preserve the pure essence of the grape while giving the wine a distinctive freshness and authenticity that no other method produces. Three wines, traditional petiscos, a guided estate tour and a landscape that makes everything taste better.

The experience opens with a guided tour of the estate and an introduction to the ancient art of amphora winemaking, exploring how the talhas work, why this method was revived at Herdade Foz da Represa and what makes the wines of Mértola genuinely distinct from the rest of the Alentejo. From there you move into the tasting itself: three carefully curated wines of 125ml each, chosen from whites, reds, rosés or a mix, each paired with traditional petiscos for a harmonious and unhurried exploration of flavour, aroma and terroir. Nelson’s approach is relaxed and personal throughout, welcoming both seasoned wine enthusiasts and the genuinely curious with equal warmth.

Is the experience suitable for all visitors?

Participants must be 18 or older to taste the wines, though younger guests are welcome to join the tour. The estate’s facilities are accessible, and we can accommodate groups, private sessions, and English- or Portuguese-language tours on request.

What is included in the tasting experience?

Each tasting includes a guided tour of the winery and amphora cellar, an introduction to the amphora fermentation process, and a curated tasting of several estate-produced wines paired with local cheeses, cured meats, and olive oil from the estate.
