Mafalda Maya was born in Lisbon in 1984. She found in jewellery a form of artistic expression, inspired by memories of her grandmother’s pieces, which were kept with love and care. She began her artistic journey at Escola António Arroio, where she was first introduced to goldsmithing techniques and developed a passion for workshop-based and experimental work. She completed her jewellery design training at Escola Contacto Directo. Between 2007 and 2009, she lived in New York, where she studied at UrbanGlass, adding glass techniques to her training. In 2010, she refined her torchwork technique with Kristina Logan in Nice. Since then, she has explored the sculptural world of wax with Susana Teixeira and Calixto Sanchez (2018 and 2022, AllisLab), as well as the foldforming technique with Ana Margarida Carvalho (2021, Ar.Co). In 2021, she took part in a torchwork workshop with Sérgio Lopes at CEARTE in Coimbra, where she discovered borosilicate glass, expanding her exploration of volume and texture. She has a studio on Avenida de Madrid, in Areeiro, Lisbon, with visits available by appointment.
FAQ's
Yes. The workshop is designed around reusing your own gold, giving your rings an added personal meaning. We recommend bringing approximately 13g for simple rings or 18g for more complex designs. Any gold that is not used will be returned to you.
Yes. You will make each other’s wedding rings by hand, with Mafalda guiding you through every stage of the process. No previous jewellery-making experience is required.
Yes. You can choose between half-round, almond and round profiles, as well as the final finish — smooth or hammered, polished or matte. You can also add a personal engraving to the inside of the rings.
The workshop takes approximately 6 hours, with a lunch break, so we recommend allowing around 7 hours in total. The studio is reserved exclusively for the two of you during the experience.
The experience costs €550 per couple (2 people). This includes the full hands-on workshop, Mafalda’s guidance throughout the process, ring sizing, gold melting and casting, making and finishing both rings, interior engraving and a jewellery box for your finished rings.
At the end of the workshop, you will take home the two wedding rings you made for each other, finished according to your chosen shape and finish, and engraved with your personal message. Your rings will come presented in a jewellery box, ready to become part of your wedding story. Any unused gold from the material you brought will also be returned to you to take home.
The price is for up to 2 people. The experience is designed for two rings, but can be adapted to one.
