I’m a self taught lover of film photography who fell into the medium during my university days when I decided to get a shitty Lomography plastic Diana and through a lot of trial and error figured out the basics over a few years. When venturing out of Portugal and home town of Cascais, the film camera was left behind but in 2017 I inherited a couple of SLRs and got back into the whole thing which kickstarted a camera shopping addiction. To save money, I learned how to develop black and white film in the tiny bathroom of the Singapore apartment I was living in. Initially for convenience, and later as an aesthetic preference I ended up gravitating towards the colorless medium because of its flexibility and subjectivity. Black and white brings me back to devouring the photos in history books as a child, letting my imagination fill in the colors of those scenes from the past. I try to achieve the timelessness that the monochrome grain brings to images and scenes where more questions are raised than answered. Moving back to Portugal and into Ericeira, I decided to set up my own darkroom and try my hand at analog prints where the magic of an image appearing of its own volition on a white page under a red light never loses its stunning effect. Being involved in the whole process from firing a shot to hanging up a print drives my motivation and passion, where I can celebrate my successes and own up to my many fuck ups along the way. The subjects of my photos are varied: landscapes,nature, people, architecture and everyday scenes. I’ve had multiple exhibitions in Portugal and keep working to create content for more.
FAQ's
Comfortable hiking shoes; we'll be walking over uneven terrain (dirt trails and rocks), though the hike isn't challenging. Bring clothes for the weather and an extra layer for when the sun goes down. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are highly recommended.
Yes, we can pick you up and drop you off in the Ericeira area.
We provide cameras and film for our students, but you're welcome to bring your own camera if you have one. We work with SLRs that are capable of operating in aperture priority (if you're unsure, bring it anyway, we'll have a ready for you just in case). To keep a consistent experience across students, we insist on using the film we provide (fomapan 400).
The focus of the workshop is on black-and-white film photography, so we don't use color film.
