After several years working across hospitality and community development within the entrepreneurship space—in highly challenging environments such as Africa and Latin America—Marieke and I felt it was time to build something more permanent. We chose Portugal as our base: a place where we could actively contribute to local development while helping elevate and preserve traditional products. The choice of location came naturally. The southwest coast of Alentejo, with its raw, breathtaking beauty and largely untouched landscapes, immediately stood out. But it was only after a careful analysis of the region’s investment opportunities that we uncovered something even more compelling: the urgent need to bring back into the spotlight a product with millennia-old traditions and truly unmatched quality—medronho spirit. The name Junior Jacques is a heartfelt tribute to our grandfathers, Albano Pereira Júnior and Jacques Joaquim Guedes. From them, we inherited two essential passions: on one hand, a fascination with the art of alchemy; on the other, a deep appreciation for the art of living well—for companionship, friendship, and shared moments. These are the foundations of Junior Jacques. These are the values and qualities that live in every single bottle we produce.
The experience includes a guided visit to our distillery, an introduction to the medronheiro tree and its fruit, a walkthrough of our distillation process, and a curated tasting of four products: two medronho eaux-de-vie and two liqueurs.
Absolutely. While the tasting is designed for adults, the visit itself—focused on nature, tradition, and craftsmanship—can be enjoyed by all ages. We’re happy to adapt the experience where needed.
We are based in the southwest Alentejo, near São Teotónio (Odemira), surrounded by the natural landscape where the medronheiro grows and our story begins.
