In this workshop, you will be guided on how to create a tufted rug and learn all the steps to start your own tufting studio 🧶

It starts with practical learning on how to use the tufting gun and all the tools used for the loop pile technique. Here, you’ll be able to try it out until you feel ready to start your rug.

For the rug’s design, we have some options available, but you might also bring your own designs to choose from. We use a small projector to help trace the design if needed, but improvisation or freehand tracing are also welcome.

After the tufting is done, we’ll spread a layer latex on the back of the rug, and leave it drying stretched on the frame for 24 hours.

The finishing on the backside is the last step, and it must be done after the latex is completely dry. You might choose to do this step yourself as homework, or having it finished by me. Once the rug is ready, it can be picked up at the studio or mailed to you with no additional costs.

Each rug has a maximum size of 55×45 cm (it can be any shape or shapes inside this measure), and it can be done by one or two people. We make from 1 to 4 rugs each workshop. The price is 125€ per rug, and 1 rug can be made individually or by two people.

The workshop duration is between 4 and 5 hours. You might take breaks anytime you need.

More about your Teacher Francisco Couto

    Francisco Couto

Francisco, also known as dead_laranja, is an illustrator and a visual artist that, for the last 4 years, has focused his work on the tufting technique.

He found in tapestry a unique way to express his work and a beautiful process that is often described as meditative, and the perfect escape from the digital era.

The Tufting Workshops started back in 2021 in Barcelona, and since then, it has always been about sharing the joy of this technique with people from all over the world. The classes are now back to Lisbon, the artist's beloved hometown.
